The wonderfull world of media blasting.

I posted awhile back about using grinding wheels to clean the frame of my 27 chevy. For the most part it worked pretty well, But last sunday I had a little media in the blast pot and decided to give it a try. We covered the driveway with a tarp to collect the material for reuse, It was a mixture of 40 60 coal slag and some other concoction, but it cleaned the frame fast of rust and other 85 year old crap. so to finish it up I went and bought some more material this time a heavier grit of 30 60 coal slag. So when the weather clears up again. It's on to the rest of it.
I will post some pic's of the finished project when it all over.

Have you guys ever done any media blasting? And what did you use?

Oh I did find out welding gloves are a must unless you want to lose your finger prints.

the only media blasting I have done has been at my buddys paint shop, I think he uses 30 60 media.... I use 40 brass slag in my blasting cabinet- if I remember correctly!!! Yeah thick gloves are a must, I found out the hard way also-being cocky and saying i knew what i was doing the first time out!!!

I blasted the frame for the 27 yesterday and it worked great. the only bad part to doing it in the driveway is the final clean up, and sweeping up and filtering the media for reuse. I suppose if you had a small building to contain the debree in it would be easier. Overall cost was a few hours, and $24.00 of material and a little compressor time. Most shops wanted around $200.00. I might have to look into a small shed for fenders and smaller items that wont fit in the blast cabinet. Here are a few pictures. I have some old black paint for the frame itself. Not gonna do any finish work on it. I figure ya can't see it unless I run you over.
Oh and again keep your fingers out of the way. don't ask me how I know.
